The municipality announced today that the completion of a project was marked by a visit from the city mayor, which included modernizing the entire building and enhancing facilities for public reception, internal operations, and heritage conservation.
The museum has been closed since 2019 due to inadequate conditions, particularly regarding roofing and insulation.
Situated within a complex that includes a 19th-century house and the Tower of Homage from the medieval wall (14th century), the Museum of Image is a unique cultural facility in the national landscape, dedicated to photography and video.
The project entailed the restoration of the original wooden and iron frames, enhancing protection and durability, along with the treatment and renovation of facades and pavements, and improving accessibility, circulation, and thermal comfort.
It also involved specialized treatment of granite elements, eliminating infiltration and humidity-related issues, renovation of roofing, ceilings, essential technical systems for the museum’s operation, and improvement of technical and archive spaces, strengthening the preservation of the collection.
According to the mayor, Ricardo Rio, “this intervention restores the dignity to the Museum of Image that it deserves, allowing the public to be welcomed with more comfort and reinforcing its mission to promote photographic art.”
“By taking care of our heritage, we project Braga for the future,” he stated.
The Museum of Image is already developing a new phase of programming, with exhibitions, visits, and initiatives aimed at both the local community and national and international visitors.
