Museums and Monuments of Portugal says that museums under renovation continue to work

“These are not closed or stagnant; there is a lot happening. Just because no one can see what’s behind closed doors,” explained Alexandre Nobre Pais, does not mean that museums are at a standstill; “they are working on other necessary tasks.”

The president of Museums and Monuments of Portugal, Alexandre Nobre Pais, participated late this morning in the ceremony for the acquisition of land to expand the archaeological field of Conímbriga.

In statements to the Lusa news agency, Alexandre Nobre Pais referred to the example of the National Museum of Conímbriga, which will also undergo renovation and expansion works.

“When this is closed, we will work on the restoration of mosaics, and teams will be much more focused on other areas. There is always a lot to do,” he emphasized.

According to the Municipality of Condeixa-a-Nova, proposals for the requalification and expansion of the National Museum of Conímbriga can be submitted until April 3.

In November of last year, Alexandre Nobre Pais disclosed that in 2025, in addition to the already closed National Museum of Archeology, National Museum of Costume, and National Museum of Music, which is scheduled to open in Mafra, the National Museum of Theatre and Dance, the National Museum of Ancient Art, and the National Museum of Azulejo will also be closed, at least for part of the year, for rehabilitation works under the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP).

The investment in the Cultural Heritage sector, which has an overall value of 214.1 million euros to be executed by 2026, involves interventions in 73 museums, monuments, and palaces, amounting to 165.8 million euros, in two national theaters – S. Carlos and D. Maria – and at Teatro Camões, with a total of 48.3 million, accumulating to 214.1 million euros for 76 interventions.

Teatro Camões in Lisbon and the José Malhoa Museum in Caldas da Rainha are among the completed projects in the cultural area under the RRP.
