The festival designed by Space Ensemble will include several musical highlights, according to program director Nuno Alves. These include “The Power of the Word — A Tribute to José Mário Branco” by Canto Nono on April 5 at 9:30 PM, a Tribute to Zeca Afonso featuring Marimba and Cello on April 6, Disco Voador’s commented concert “Music for a World” on April 3 at 2:30 PM and 6:30 PM, and a performance by Bia Maria with the choir of the Fernandes Fão Music Academy on April 6 at 5:00 PM.
The main theme is music, yet the entire program provides an opportunity to examine the evolution of society over the past five decades, specifically since April 25, 1974, Alves added.
The artistic entity Space Ensemble, based in Paredes de Coura in the district of Viana do Castelo, aims to recall the achievements of the 1974 Revolution and explore the growth of democracy and society, encouraging intergenerational dialogue through artistic engagement and participation.
This initiative is supported by the Art and Democracy program, an initiative celebrating the 50th anniversary of April 25 in cooperation with the Directorate-General of Arts.
The program further includes film screenings, discussions, workshops, and exhibitions, drawing together artists from various generations.
On April 5, the Valadares Theater will show the documentary “1982” at 5:00 PM. This film documents a local election campaign in Paredes de Coura, eight years after the 1974 events, when the electorate was predominantly illiterate, and infrastructure was underdeveloped.
On April 2, the Social and Parish Center of Moledo will screen the “Trilogy of the Valleys” documentary at 2:30 PM. Filmed in Monção in 2022, this is another locality in the Viana do Castelo district.
From April 2 to April 30, the Caminha Municipal Museum will host the exhibition “25 Days for Freedom,” which captures daily graphic registers from April 1 to April 25. Marta Neves aimed to illustrate the rights achieved and what they mean to people.
At Caminha’s Basic and Secondary School, on April 4, from 8:30 AM to 10:30 AM, a workshop with Mariana Malhão, illustrator of the book “Are You Free?” will take place.
On the same day at 2:30 PM, the Valadares Theater will feature a film-concert composed of unpublished footage collected through the “Did You Film April 25?” campaign, promoted by the Portuguese Cinematheque and the 50th-anniversary Commission of April 25, with live music by Space Ensemble.
