The statutes of the PSD stipulate that the party’s National Council is responsible for approving the nomination of its candidate for Prime Minister.
This vote was conducted at the onset of the National Council meeting, as per the decision of its president, Miguel Albuquerque, during the segment still open to the media.
“It is very important when the Prime Minister is under intense scrutiny and criticism. It’s always the fruit-bearing trees that are targeted,” stated the leader of PSD/Madeira, who recently secured electoral victory in the region last Sunday.
During the vote, there were neither abstentions nor dissenting votes, with Albuquerque praising the “unanimous approval and acclamation,” as there were cheers and chants of “PSD, PSD.”
The upcoming early legislative elections on May 18 will mark the second for Luís Montenegro at the helm of the PSD, following his victory in the March 10, 2024 elections, where he surpassed the PS by approximately 50,000 votes.
