The Government’s proposed Nationality Law was approved by the Committee on Constitutional Affairs this Friday.
For the proposal to pass the final global vote, set for next Tuesday, it must secure an absolute majority of 116 votes in favor from the 230 active deputies.
Given the opposition from PS, Livre, PCP, and Bloco de Esquerda during the special review process, Chega will need to join forces with PSD, CDS, and Iniciativa Liberal for the proposal to be approved.
A social-democratic source informed Lusa agency that no assurance has yet been received from Chega about supporting the decree in its final global vote.
“The choice for them [Chega] is whether they want a better nationality law than the current one. This is the decision Chega will have to make,” stated the same PSD representative.

The parliamentary Committee on Constitutional Affairs today approved, in specialty, the sanction of loss of nationality, which will be introduced into the Penal Code.
In statements to the Lusa agency, Cristina Rodrigues, a deputy from Chega, mentioned that “the party will still decide” regarding the changes now introduced in the Government’s proposal text.
Today, PSD and CDS rejected all amendment proposals presented by Chega – some of which were red lines set by the party’s president, André Ventura – and only aligned by setting the condition of guaranteeing means of subsistence for access to Portuguese nationality.
Chega, on its part, among other lines of demarcation, even voted against the PSD/CDS proposal for granting nationality to stateless persons residing for at least four years in national territory. In most cases, however, Chega approved or abstained on the PSD/CDS proposals.
