Navy deactivates (another) explosive device on a beach in Sesimbra

The Portuguese Navy deactivated an explosive device this Friday on Penedo Beach in Sesimbra, near Praia das Bicas, where another device had already been neutralized earlier this week.

A statement issued to the press detailed that the alert was raised by members of the SeaWatch project.

Upon receiving notification of the situation, an Explosive Ordnance Disposal team from the Diving Detachment No. 1 (DMS1) was deployed, supported by elements of the Maritime Police and the Sesimbra Volunteer Fire Department.

“On site, in coordination with the Port Authority of Setúbal, DMS1 identified the explosive device, used for signaling, and deactivated it at around 2:30 p.m.,” the statement reads.

Last Wednesday, a team of Portuguese Navy divers deactivated an explosive device on Praia das Bicas, also in Sesimbra. On that occasion, the alert was given by a lifeguard, and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team from Diving Detachment No. 1 (DMS1), supported by elements of the Maritime Police and Sesimbra Volunteer Fire Department, was promptly dispatched.

At the location, working in coordination with the Port Authority of Setúbal, the Navy’s DMS1 team identified and deactivated the explosive device around 6:30 p.m.

Authorities emphasize that whenever such a device is found, “it should not be moved, and the local Maritime Authority should be contacted immediately either directly or via the national emergency number 112.”
