“As a precaution, and pending the results of water quality analyses, the beach is closed to swimming,” the municipality of the Leiria district announced in a press release.
The council explained that “a recent technical occurrence in the stormwater system caused an abnormal runoff accompanied by foul odors near the coastline.”
Although the situation was immediately identified and resolved, and there are no “visible signs of runoff or bad smells,” the council requested water analyses at the outlet of the conduit to “ensure water quality and population safety.”
In the statement, the Nazaré City Council assured that it continues to monitor the situation, with reinforced monitoring and frequent local surveillance to prevent any recurrence.
