Nazaré Sea? More than 30 people went to the emergency room for vomiting and diarrhea.

The Leiria Hospital Center received 32 individuals at its Alcobaça and Leiria units with symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea by 5:00 PM this Friday. It is suspected that contact with the waters at Nazaré beach may be the cause of the illness.

The majority of cases are mild, with only one patient remaining under observation on Friday. Among the 32 individuals treated in the emergency services of the hospitals in Alcobaça and Leiria and the Personalized Health Care Unit of Nazaré, 17 were adults and 15 were children.

Notícias ao Minuto attempted to contact the Leiria Hospital Center but has not yet received a response.

The Nazaré beach was closed to bathers this Friday due to a technical failure that led to a discharge of stormwater drains and an unpleasant odor in the area.

In a press release, the municipality of Nazaré states that “as a precaution, and pending test results on water quality, and by decision of the competent authorities, the beach remains closed to bathing.”

The local government explains that “a recent technical incident in the pluvial system caused an abnormal runoff, accompanied by unpleasant odors along the coastline.”

Though the situation was immediately identified and resolved and there are no “visible signs of runoff or bad odors,” the municipality requested water analyses at the outlet to “ensure water quality and public safety.”

The municipal note assures that the Nazaré City Council continues to monitor the situation, with enhanced surveillance and regular checks at the site to prevent any recurrence.

“We reiterate our commitment to public health, environmental quality, and the safety of our beach users, recognized with awards like the Blue Flag, and we reinforce the appeal for calm and trust in the actions of the municipal services and the competent authorities,” the municipality’s statement adds.
