Nelson de Matos, a distinguished editor with over two decades at Dom Quixote, notably worked with revered figures in Portuguese literature such as José Cardoso Pires and António Lobo Antunes.
The editor passed away at Hospital dos Lusíadas in Lisbon, as confirmed by his wife. She stated that the wake is scheduled for Tuesday, with the funeral on Wednesday, though the location has not been specified.
The timing remains unconfirmed, added the editor’s wife. After leaving Dom Quixote in 2004, Nelson de Matos established Edições Nelson de Matos.
Dom Quixote honored him on Instagram, expressing condolences to the family.
“Dom Quixote pays tribute to Nelson de Matos on this sad day for all of us, recognizing his role in editing and publishing some of the main Portuguese-language writers at our house, and to whom we owe the creation of what is still known today as the great house of Portuguese authors,” read the statement from the publisher.
Offering their “most heartfelt condolences” to the family, the editorial brand also assured that they would “do everything to honor and continue the path started by Nelson de Matos.”
