“On October 12, 2025, Portugal will join the launch of the Entry/Exit System (EES), the new European system for automated control within the Schengen area, replacing traditional passport stamps with centralized electronic records,” announced a joint communiqué by the Internal Security System (SSI), PSP, and GNR, among other entities.
The implementation will occur simultaneously and in stages over six months across all countries within the Schengen area.
The EES targets all non-EU citizens entering for short stays (up to 90 days within a 180-day period), regardless of visa requirements.
Key procedural changes include the electronic registration of travelers’ entries and exits, noting date, time, and border checkpoint, alongside biometric data collection (four fingerprints and a photo) at the first entry.
The system, which will be operational at airports and ports, enables automatic detection of overstays within the Schengen area and ensures interoperability with other European databases.
“Compared to the current system based on manual passport stamping, the EES will more swiftly detect forged documents, irregular entries, and other security threats, enhancing external border protection and improving data-sharing and cooperation among Member States,” the authorities assert.
In Portugal, the implementation is coordinated by the SSI in collaboration with the PSP, GNR, ANA – Aeroportos de Portugal, port authorities, and the National Civil Aviation Authority.
