The Guinness World Records announced a new accolade for a Nigerian chef, highlighting a version of Nigeria’s iconic dish, made with rice, tomatoes, and onions, weighing a total of 8.7 tons.
The chef began preparing the dish on Friday, using a massive six-meter-wide pot constructed specifically for the event. The preparation involved four tons of basmati rice and hundreds of kilograms of onions, tomatoes, and olive oil, among other ingredients.
Thousands gathered to support and partake in the final distribution of the dish, which concluded overnight after several hours of preparation.
“We did it again,” exclaimed the 28-year-old chef on her social media account, X.
In 2023, Hilda Baci previously achieved a Guinness record for the longest solo cooking session, standing for 93 hours and 11 minutes preparing local dishes without interruption. However, that record has since been surpassed.
Jollof rice traces its roots back to the ancient Wolof Empire, also known as the Jolof Empire, spanning from Senegal to Mauritania and including present-day Gambia.
This African specialty is at the heart of some rivalries, notably between Nigeria and Ghana, with each claiming the “best recipe.”
