“This suspension aims to ensure a safe, effective, and coordinated transition of all services and teams to the new facilities, maintaining the continuity of healthcare with quality and safety,” the health unit stated in a press release.
During the suspension period, the health unit informed that patients in urgent situations can go to the Hospital Professor Doutor Fernando Fonseca, which “will ensure the necessary assistance response.”
The Amadora-Sintra also urged patients to call SNS 24 before visiting any health unit, a contact that “ensures proper guidance and avoids unnecessary travel and waiting times.”
The statement also highlighted that the opening of the new Emergency Service of the Sintra Hospital “marks a fundamental improvement in healthcare in the region.”
The new hospital, construction of which began in 2021, is located in Casal da Cavaleira, Algueirão-Mem Martins parish, covering an area of 10,500 square meters with 49,000 square meters of open space. It represents an investment by the Sintra City Council exceeding 62 million euros, set to benefit 400,000 patients.
It includes outpatient services, external consultations and exams, a mental health unit, rehabilitation physical medicine, a collection center, and complementary diagnostic and therapeutic means, an outpatient surgery unit with a surgery block and recovery area.
It also features a basic emergency service to handle about 60,000 emergencies, roughly half of those conducted at Hospital Amadora-Sintra, a Convalescence Unit with 60 beds, a pharmacy, a sterilization unit, and a space for teaching and training.
