The incident occurred approximately nine nautical miles (around 16.7 kilometers) southwest of Viana do Castelo’s bar, where the Viana do Castelo Life-Saving Station assisted three individuals after receiving an alert at 10:51 a.m. from the Lisbon Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC Lisbon), according to AMN.
Following the alert, crew members from the Viana do Castelo Life-Saving Station were immediately activated and promptly assisted the three individuals on board, who were in good physical condition and did not require medical assistance.
“Due to the damage caused to the sailboat’s rudder, the Life-Saving Station’s vessel escorted it to the entrance of the bar and subsequently towed it to the Marina of Viana do Castelo to minimize risk to navigation safety,” the statement adds.
The sailboat will only be allowed to navigate again after undergoing an inspection to ensure it meets navigation conditions, according to AMN.
The Maritime Police Command of Viana do Castelo has taken charge of the incident.
