New National Program for Healthy Eating 2022-2030

The Ministry of Health launches the “I choose to eat well!” campaign on social networks, the kick-off for moving from plan to practice.

The Secretary of State for Health Promotion, Margarida Tavares, presented this Friday, March 3, the strategic guidelines of the National Program for Healthy Eating Promotion (PNPAS) 2022-2030. The presentation took place at the closing of the conference “Promoting Healthy Diet: Past, Present and Future”, a meeting organized by the Directorate General of Health under the National Program for the Promotion of Healthy Diet, which presented its 2022 activities report.

The conference brought together several experts, focusing on nutrition during the first thousand days of life, the food supply of canteens and the studies promoted by PNPAS, particularly on the nutritional characterization of the national food market or the type of fish provided to children in schools.

The new program, with a horizon up to 2030, was in public consultation at the end of last year, and the final version has now been published, establishing targets for the promotion of healthy eating, with an impact on reducing the burden of disease and improving quality of life.

“Inadequate nutrition is one of the main preventable causes of chronic diseases, loss of quality of life and premature mortality in Portugal. Therefore, we have no doubt of the urgency of changing reality,” said the Secretary of State for Health Promotion, stressing that the implementation of measures to achieve the goals of the Program requires the collaboration of different partners, municipalities, schools and academia.

Margarida Tavares also announced the reactivation of the Integrated Strategy Group for the Promotion of Healthy Eating, which brings together various sectoral areas of the Government, “so that healthy eating is in all policies and that, on the other hand, the policies of other governmental areas can also play their role in fulfilling the Program.

In order to disseminate the main goals of the new program, the Ministry of Health launched this Friday on social networks the campaign “I choose to eat well!”, kickoff to move from plan to practice. In addition to information on the different goals of the plan, in the coming weeks, online interaction moments will be promoted with citizens for dialogue and clarification of doubts in this area, with the aim of contributing to greater mobilization and empowerment for healthy eating options in everyday life.
