New Right says that absolute majorities of PS and PSD are “stagnation.”

At the start of a rally that began in Campo Grande and concluded with lunch at Café Nicola in Rossio, Lisbon, Ossanda Líber asserted that Nova Direita (ND) is “a truly right-wing party” with “serious proposals.”

“We are only concerned with the people’s daily lives and the present. We are not interested in the future at this moment,” she stated, emphasizing her focus on addressing issues affecting children and families. She affirmed that a vote for ND “is the most beneficial for families.”

When asked by journalists whether surpassing the threshold of 16,000 votes obtained in the 2024 legislative elections would be a satisfactory outcome, the ND president and the party’s lead candidate in the capital was definitive: “No, a good result would be to elect,” she clarified on the last day of the electoral campaign.

However, she acknowledged the difficulty she faces in being elected in the Lisbon constituency, as the capital “tends to vote left.”

Líber also expressed her belief that the upcoming Sunday elections will not yield any absolute majority, which she described as preferable, because “absolute majorities today, concentrated in the PS and PSD, represent the majority of stagnation.”

The ND president echoed the words of the President of the Republic, who has highlighted the need for a stable government solution, noting that “no one can endure more elections,” particularly “small parties.”

“It is not feasible to be continuously [in elections]. We do not have time to conduct fieldwork, to be with the people… This is not reasonable. It is schizophrenic. I believe stability is necessary,” she emphasized.

Therefore, Líber indicated that the mission for these elections is to ensure “there are enough votes concentrated on the right, even though they are spread across various parties,” to “secure that stability.” She expressed hope that voter turnout would match the low levels recorded in 2024, which were the lowest since 1995.

The Nova Direita is set to compete in 13 of the 22 electoral districts in the elections on May 18. In the 2024 legislative elections, the party’s debut participation, ND secured 0.25%, with 16,442 votes.
