New Right was not discouraged by the initial results in Madeira.

“I am not at all unhappy with our result, nothing like that, I am not discouraged, quite the opposite,” Paulo Ricardo Azevedo told Lusa.

The New Right finished last, with 0.34% of the vote – totaling 487 votes – according to provisional results from the General Secretariat of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The leading candidate emphasized that the New Right only arrived in Madeira in December of last year and was unprepared for these elections, which “fell into our lap,” as they expected the next elections to be the municipal ones in September or October.

The official also highlighted that the campaign served to present a new party to the electorate, noting that the ND comprises a group of individuals of whom “99% were not previously involved in politics.”

On Sunday, over 255,000 voters were called to participate in the early regional legislative elections in Madeira to determine the new composition of the archipelago’s parliament, with 14 candidacies in the running.

The PSD won the regional elections, securing 43.43% of the votes and 23 mandates, while Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) became the second political force with 21%, and the PS fell to third place with 15.6%.

Chega obtained 5.47%, the CDS-PP 3.0%, and the Liberal Initiative 2.17%, based on the provisional data from the General Secretariat of the Ministry of Internal Affairs – Electoral Administration.

The PAN failed to maintain the deputy it had in parliament, and BE and CDU continued to remain outside the legislative body.
