New RTP organization reduces directors to 23 and 97 workers leave

In a statement, the board led by Nicolau Santos announced, “Given the objectives outlined in the new Strategic Project for 2024-2026 and the enormous challenges facing the media, the Board of Directors (CA), after careful consideration, believes it is time for an internal reorganization of RTP.”

This “urgent digital transition and increasingly necessary process optimization requires an enhanced ability to meet new challenges in managing the Public Media Service,” the statement noted, coinciding with the dismissal of the RTP information management team led by António José Teixeira.

Thus, “with the implementation of the Voluntary Departure Plan and the departure of about 97 employees, including four directors, the CA has decided to move forward with a change in RTP’s organizational structure. This aims to make the company more efficient, rejuvenated, and better prepared for transformations in the media sector” and “accelerates change towards implementing the measures outlined in the strategic project.”

Particularly “regarding the digital transition and also considering the recent Media Plan created by the government,” said the CA.

RTP’s organizational structure will now be organized into four main areas of activity and subdivided into 28 departments, instead of the current 39: corporate (10), operations (4), thematic content (7), and programmatic content (7).

“Three support committees for the CA will also be created, comprised of people with different perspectives and functions within RTP, allowing for a strategic response to transversal issues,” the administration noted.

In this new organization, “RTP will have 23 directors (with five departments in accumulation) compared to the current 30 directors and deputy directors reporting to the CA.”

According to the administration, the new heads of the different departments “will propose the best approach and organizational structure for their respective areas, considering the objectives defined in the Strategic Project, and the human resource needs for hiring or training.”

The administration also mentioned that for the implementation of the new organizational structure, “the applicable legal procedures were followed, specifically concerning the CGI [Independent General Council] and the ERC [Regulatory Entity for Social Communication].”

The reorganization will be implemented starting July 1, next week.
