Following today’s plenary session, the announcement of the results was made, declaring “not elected,” and the parliament president, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, stated that a new election must be conducted in the next session should a candidate be presented.
The Chega party proposed that deputy Francisco Gomes replace Gabriel Mithá Ribeiro as secretary of the parliament’s board after the resignation of Leiria deputy, according to an official party source.
Francisco Gomes was elected as a deputy for the Madeira constituency for the Chega party in the current and previous legislature, and he had previously been elected in the 12th legislature for the PSD.
According to the Assembly of the Republic’s regulations, candidates are considered elected if they obtain the absolute majority of votes from deputies in active functions, i.e., at least 116 votes.
In this election for Francisco Gomes, 177 of the 230 members of the Assembly of the Republic voted, with only 98 votes in favor, 61 blank, and 18 null votes.
On Monday, the Chega parliamentary group announced that deputy Gabriel Mithá Ribeiro requested to resign from his deputy mandate, to be replaced by Rui Fernandes, but the reasons for this decision were not disclosed.
Mithá Ribeiro was elected deputy in the 15th, 16th, and 17th legislatures, always for the Leiria constituency and was reinstated as secretary of the Assembly of the Republic’s board last June, after the snap legislative elections.
