New strike begins in airport handling services (and extends until January)

A strike organized by SIMA – Sindicato das Indústrias Metalúrgicas e Afins and the Transport Workers Union (STA) encompasses various periods from midnight today until midnight on January 2, covering a total of 76 days.

The Arbitration Tribunal of the Economic and Social Council mandated minimum services, which SIMA strongly criticized, stating that they are “not ‘minimum services'” and highlighting that they require “maintaining approximately 80% of the normal operation.”

SIMA announced in August the scheduling of new strikes by the company responsible for ground handling services, during alternating periods between today and January 2, 2026, including long weekends and high-traffic dates such as Christmas and New Year.

This new strike notice by SIMA follows previous strikes in July and August and the suspension of planned strikes for the end of August after meetings at the Ministry of Labor.

In contrast, Menzies ensured that the latest strike cancellations “were not the result of any agreement, negotiation or concession,” stating that their stance “remains unchanged” with no changes to commitments made until 2029.

Which dates will be affected by strikes?

The first strike is scheduled from midnight today until midnight on September 9, followed by new stoppages from September 12 to 15, September 19 to 22, and September 26 to 28.

In October, strikes are planned from October 3 to 6, October 10 to 13, October 17 to 20, October 24 to 27 and from October 31 to November 3. Additional stoppages will occur from November 7 to 10, November 14 to 17, November 21 to 24, November 28 to December 1, December 5 to 8, and December 12 to 15.

The last strike is scheduled from December 19 to January 2, 2026.
