
A newborn baby was discovered on Wednesday night at the premises of ERSUC – Resíduos Sólidos do Centro, S.A., in Vil de Matos, Coimbra, at a waste treatment facility.
The baby, of African descent, reportedly still had the umbilical cord attached.
The grim discovery was reported at around 9:30 PM, prompting authorities to rush to the scene.
The case initially handled by the National Republican Guard (GNR) has now reportedly been transferred to the jurisdiction of the Judiciary Police (PJ).

The waste facility in Vil de Matos receives refuse collected from 36 municipalities in the central region. ERSUC covers an area of 6,694 km² (7.9% of the national territory), serves a population of approximately one million inhabitants, and processes over 300,000 tons of waste annually.
