The Lisbon region was hit by intense rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong gusts of wind during the early hours of Wednesday. However, the worst of the situation has passed for now.
“We have been experiencing severe weather since midnight along the coastal regions,” reported Maria João Frada, a meteorologist at the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), in a statement to Notícias ao Minuto. She emphasized the intense rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds “especially in Greater Lisbon.”
She further explained that this “line that formed in the southern region” is now “moving northeast,” beginning to affect the regions of Setúbal, Santarém, and Évora.
The meteorologist noted that “the bad weather is not over yet”, as there are “more organized lines bringing thunderstorms, intense rainfall, and strong gusts again.”
“A scenario that will continue until the end of the morning,” she added.
She also indicated that there would be improvement along the coast from 9:00 AM, but “still with showers that can occasionally be strong.” From this time, the orange alert is expected to downgrade to yellow.
In the inland areas, the bad weather is expected to persist until 12:00 PM, after which the orange warning will be downgraded to yellow.
The meteorologist further stated that in the afternoon, there would be showers along the coast, in the North and Center, with “conditions organized for hail.”
It should be noted that all districts of mainland Portugal, except for Bragança, are under orange warning due to the forecast of occasionally heavy rain.
