Under the banner ‘More Wages and Rights – Another Path is Possible!’, just past 3:20 PM, hundreds of people gathered at Praça Marquês de Pombal, holding signs reading “35 hours for all”, “no to the labor package”, “against right-wing policy and exploitation – for a dignified life”.
To the sound of chants accompanied by drums, the protesters are voicing “the labor package is a social setback” and are preparing to march down Avenida da Liberdade.
The demonstrators will move down Avenida da Liberdade, with workers from the districts of Leiria, Castelo Branco, Santarém, Lisbon, Setúbal, Portalegre, Évora, Beja, and the Algarve converging at the Restauradores area, where speeches will be delivered by Interjovem and the Secretary-General of CGTP-IN, Tiago Oliveira.
CGTP has been emphasizing that the Government’s draft project represents “a true setback” in workers’ rights, highlighting proposals deemed unconstitutional.
During the last Social Concertation meeting on September 10, the Government pledged to present a new version of the draft project, “with developments” in areas related to family and parenthood, indicated by the Secretary-General of the General Union of Workers (UGT) and the President of the Portuguese Business Confederation.
