“With profound sorrow, we announce that our father, Mario Vargas Llosa, passed away today in Lima, surrounded by his family and at peace,” wrote his son Álvaro Vargas Llosa on his social media platform, X.
The message, also shared by his daughter Morgana Vargas Llosa, emphasized that the family publicly announced his passing “surrounded by his family and at peace.”
“His departure will sadden his family, friends, and readers around the world, but we hope they find solace, as we do, in the fact that he had a long, varied, and fruitful life, leaving behind a legacy that will survive him,” the message read.
The same message detailed that in the coming hours and days, funeral ceremonies would be conducted “according to his instructions,” therefore “there will be no public ceremony.”

“Our mother, our children, and we ourselves trust that we will have the space and privacy to say goodbye to him with family and his closest friends. His remains, as he wished, will be cremated,” the message concluded.
