“It is important for the country to have this commemoration and to maintain this historical record to pass on to all generations, so we can understand where we came from and what we want to build for the future,” stated Luís Montenegro in brief remarks to journalists following the military parade held at Praça do Comércio in Lisbon, marking the 50th anniversary of November 25, 1975.
Montenegro attended this military parade accompanied by several government officials, including the Ministers of Defense, Finance, Internal Administration, Justice, Health, and Agriculture and Fisheries.
In comments to journalists after the parade, the Minister of Justice, Rita Júdice, remarked that the ceremony was “very beautiful” and “honors Portugal’s history.”
“It is important to reconcile with history, and therefore, it is very important that this day is celebrated,” the minister noted.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Internal Administration, Maria Lúcia Amaral, also stated that the “ceremony honors the country and its history,” and when asked if the country has not been honoring its history, she replied, “of course it has.”
“It hasn’t disappeared from memory. It’s just that this is a significant date, half a century, and it deserves to be commemorated,” she considered.
