Number of films made by women remains “incredibly low”

Actress Nicole Kidman, a 57-year-old Australian-American, reiterated her commitment to collaborating with a female filmmaker every 18 months while receiving the prestigious “Women in Motion” award. This accolade honors individuals who advance the role of women in cinema and society.

Since making this pledge, Kidman has worked with 27 female directors. Reflecting on the situation from eight years ago, she remembered the significant disparity in available choices for film directors, noting there were simply not enough women in the field.

Kidman emphasized the need for long-term measures to increase the number of women directors, particularly through financial support. Speaking during her 32nd appearance at the Cannes Film Festival, she stressed the importance of “molding, supporting, and helping” women in the industry.

The actress urged the creation of a “protective force field” around women, enabling them to perform at their best without the fear of having only “one shot” at opportunity.

Kidman praised the fact that seven out of the 22 films competing for the Palme d’Or at this year’s festival are directed by women.
