Number of immigrants in Portugal quadrupled between 2017 and 2024

Portugal has witnessed a significant rise in its immigrant population, nearly quadrupling from 2017 to 2024, according to an interim report released by the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA) on Tuesday. By December 31, 2024, there were at least 1,546,521 foreign nationals residing in Portugal, compared to 421,785 recorded seven years prior.

The report highlights that the figures for 2024 might require an upward revision by approximately 50,000 individuals. This adjustment is anticipated once the pending applications for regularization under the “transitory regime,” established by the national parliament (Law No. 40/2024), are fully processed, according to the document.

“These approximately 50,000 individuals were already present within the national territory before June 3, 2024, and have already submitted applications under the transitory regime. With this adjustment, it is estimated that the number of foreigners in Portugal in 2024 will reach around 1.6 million,” the report added.
