According to fast statistics on air transport published by the National Statistics Institute (INE), 42 million passengers passed through national airports.
“Between January and July 2025, the number of handled passengers increased by 4.9%, and the movement of cargo and mail grew by 2.6% (+4.7% and +14.0% in the same period of 2024, respectively),” states the INE.
The United Kingdom was the main country of origin and destination for flights, considering the volume of disembarked and boarded passengers on international flights in the first seven months of 2025.
An “increase in the number of disembarked passengers (+2.9%) and boarded passengers (+2.6%) compared to the same period in 2024” was noted, according to INE.
Conversely, “France recorded decreases in the number of disembarked (-1.5%) and boarded passengers (-1.3%) and occupied the second position.”
Spain, Germany, and Italy occupied the third, fourth, and fifth positions, respectively, as the main countries of origin and destination, the INE reports.
The capital’s airport infrastructure concentrated nearly half of the movements in the first seven months of the year.
“Lisbon airport handled 49.1% of the total passengers (20.6 million), +3.0% compared to the same period in 2024. Faro airport recorded a 7.3% growth in passenger movement (about six million, 14.2% of the total), and Porto airport concentrated 22.8% of the total passengers handled (9.6 million) and increased by 5.5%,” states the INE, in the balance of the January to July period.
Regarding cargo and mail, there was a 2.6% increase between January and July, totaling 148.2 thousand tons.
“The movement of goods at Lisbon airport accounted for 78.0% of the total, reaching 115.6 thousand tons (+4.0% compared to the same period in 2024). Across the other airports, the cargo and mail movement decreased by 1.9%,” reports the statistical institute.
In July alone, 7.6 million passengers passed through the airports, an increase of 5.2% year-on-year.
Despite the growth trajectory in July exceeding 5%, the difference from the same period the previous year in the previous month was greater. In June, the number of passengers had increased by 6%.
Concerning cargo and mail movements, INE data shows that in July, 22.8 thousand tons circulated, a 3.2% increase compared to July of the previous year. Also in this segment, a slowdown in the growth rate is observed. In June, cargo and mail had grown 3.9% year-on-year.
INE statistics account for movements at the airport infrastructures of Lisbon, Porto, Faro, Ponta Delgada, Madeira, Porto Santo, Beja, Horta, Flores, Santa Maria, Terceira, Pico, Graciosa, São Jorge, Corvo, Portimão, Bragança, Cascais, Vila Real, and Viseu.
