
The number of passengers increased across all modes of transport in the second quarter of the year, with trains experiencing the most significant year-on-year growth, the National Statistics Institute (INE) announced today.
National airports handled 20.5 million passengers in the second quarter, a 6.6% increase compared to the same period in 2024, following a 2.4% rise in the first quarter of this year.
According to INE, 59.2 million passengers traveled by train in the same quarter, marking a 7.5% rise compared to the same period in 2024, against a 10.2% increase in the first quarter of this year, and 73.9 million chose the metro system, a 0.8% rise from the same period in 2024, following a 4.1% increase in the first quarter of 2025.
The number of passengers using ferry services also grew to 6.2 million, reflecting a 0.3% increase compared to the same quarter in 2024, against a 1.4% rise in the first quarter.
Regarding freight transport, there were decreases via road (-6.9%, versus -3.9% in the first quarter of 2025) and maritime (-6.8%, compared to -3.9% in the first quarter of 2025) and increases via rail (+12.6%, compared to +3.9% in the first quarter of 2025) and air (+4.6%, against +0.4% in the first quarter of 2025).
