The number of registered unemployed individuals in employment centers decreased by 3% in May year-on-year and by 4.1% compared to April, totaling 300,905, as reported by IEFP today.
The Institute for Employment and Vocational Training (IEFP) noted that by the end of May, “there were 300,905 unemployed individuals registered with employment services on the mainland and autonomous regions, which represents 66.5% of a total of 452,697 job applications.”
This marks a reduction of 9,358 people registered in employment centers compared to May 2024. This decline is attributed to individuals registered for less than 12 months (-10,751), those seeking new employment (-8,039), and those over 25 years of age (-6,375), the IEFP revealed in its statement today.
Compared to April, this represents 12,718 fewer people registered in employment centers. This marks the fourth consecutive month of decline since February.
Among the professional groups with the most significant reductions, compared to the same period last year, there is a noted decrease in unemployment among “administrative staff” (-13.9%), “technicians and intermediate-level professions” (-9.2%), and “skilled workers in industry, construction, and crafts” (-6.5%).
However, there was an “increase in unemployment in the ‘unskilled workers’ group” (+5.2%), the institute notes.
Regionally, registered unemployment decreased in all regions compared to the same period last year, with the most significant reduction recorded in the autonomous region of Madeira (13.1%).
In terms of sequential comparison, “a decrease was recorded in all regions, with an overall reduction in unemployment of about -4.1%,” according to the IEFP.
By the end of May, there were 18,133 job vacancies across the country’s employment services, marking an annual increase in filed offers (+5,904, +48.3%) and compared to the previous month (+1,308, +7.8%).
