“Of the total of unemployed people who are married or in a de facto union, 9,780 (8.2%) also have their spouse registered as unemployed at the employment service, totaling 4,890 unemployed couples in August 2025. This represents a decrease of 0.6% compared to the same period of the previous year,” according to the report by the Institute of Employment and Vocational Training (IEFP) released today.
Despite the downturn, it is a slower decrease compared to July, when it fell by 1.5% compared to the same period last year.
In a month-on-month comparison, the number of couples in which both spouses are unemployed increased by 5%.
The IEFP also reported that the number of unemployed registered with mainland employment services was 292,228 at the end of August, representing a year-on-year decrease of 3.4%, but an increase of 3.1% compared to the previous month.
