The unemployment rate stood at 6.4%, compared to 6.3% in the previous month and 6.1% in August 2024.
In absolute terms, the number of unemployed increased by 46,000 people compared to July and 153,000 relative to August 2024.
During the summer, the number of unemployed in Germany typically rises, given that companies hire less and many professional training contracts end.
“In August, what we expected happened, due to the summer break, the number of unemployed exceeded three million,” said Andrea Nahles, president of the Federal Employment Agency.
According to Nahles, the labor market continues to be affected by the weakness of the German economy in recent years, although, in her opinion, “signs of stabilization are already being observed.”
The German economy is going through a crisis period with two consecutive years of recession, although the labor market has remained relatively robust.
Despite the rise in unemployment in August, the Institute for Labor Market Studies considers that there are positive signs that the trend could reverse.
