Number of unemployed people registered at the IEFP drops 6% in April

The number of unemployed registered with the Institute of Employment and Professional Training (IEFP) at the end of April fell 6%, to less than 300 thousand people. At the end of April, a total of 295,422 people were registered as unemployed with the IEFP, down 6% year-on-year (19,013 fewer people) , and 3.5% over the previous month ( 10,735 fewer people), reveal the monthly unemployment statistics, published by the IEFP. It is the third consecutive month that the number of unemployed registered with the agency is falling.

Between March and April, registered unemployment fell across all regions, with the highlight being the 21.8% reduction in the Algarve region.

Also at the sectoral level, all sectors of economic activity – agriculture (minus 9.0%), secondary (minus 1.6%), and tertiary (minus 3.5%) – registered declines, as well as in year-on-year terms – in the agricultural sector the drop was 1.7%, while in the secondary and tertiary sectors it was 3.9% and 5%, respectively.

“TheInstitute of Employment and Professional Training explains, “The groups that contributed most to the decrease in unemployment, compared to the same month in 2022,in absoluteterms, were those aged 25 or over (18,452 less), those looking for a new job (17,238 less), and those who have been registered for 12 months or more (37,764 less).

Youth and long-term unemployment decreasing
The number of unemployed young people registered at job centers also fell again, to less than 32,000 people, “the lowest ever”. There are, therefore, 2,360 less young people registered with the IEFP than in the previous month (which represents a decrease of 6.9%) and 561 less young people than in the same period last year (a drop of 1.7%).

The same is true of long-term unemployment, with a fall of 0.7% (798 fewer people), which is 24.4% below the level recorded in April 2022 (37,764 fewer people).

Job offers drop 40% compared to March
Throughout the month, 37,135 unemployed people registered at the employment services throughout the country, which translates into a drop of 1.4% year-on-year and 22.8% quarter-on-quarter, after, in March, the number of new registrations had soared by 15%.

In terms of job offers received this month, a total of 8,782 offers were received throughout the country. The number is significantly lower than in the previous month (25.9% less, or 3,073 fewer offers) and also in the month before (40.4% less, or 5,961 offers).
