Nuno Portas. Vila Viçosa City Council declares two days of municipal mourning

The president of the municipality, Inácio Esperança, highlighted today that architect Nuno Portas “is a native of Vila Viçosa” and someone who “always cherished his hometown.”

“He served as a municipal deputy here, with his father having been the president of the council, and was one of the main driving forces behind Vila Viçosa’s bid for World Heritage status,” he recalled.

The first conference on Vila Viçosa’s bid for World Heritage status, held in 1999 or 2000, was delivered by architect Nuno Portas.

“He is someone Vila Viçosa is very proud of,” Esperança emphasized.

Noting that Nuno Portas “did a lot for his hometown” and has work in Vila Viçosa, Esperança remembered that the municipal council awarded the architect a Medal of Cultural Merit in 2012.

The wake for architect Nuno Portas, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 90, will take place today in the late afternoon in Lisbon, with the ceremonies scheduled for Tuesday, followed by a procession to Vila Viçosa, the funeral agency announced.

A distinguished thinker, researcher, and promoter of housing and urban policies in Portugal and abroad, Nuno Portas gained international recognition, especially in Spain and Brazil.

Nuno Rodrigo Martins Portas, a prominent figure in Portuguese culture, was born on September 23, 1934, in São Bartolomeu, Vila Viçosa, and from a young age was divided between his passions for cinema and architecture.
