“After ‘O Pátio das Cantigas’ – the most-watched Portuguese film ever in cinemas -, Leonel Vieira returns to the big screen with a new comedy that celebrates tradition and national identity,” stated NOS Audiovisuais, the distributor of the film, in a press release.
In the weekend rankings, ‘O Pátio da Saudade’ was only surpassed by the American films “Hour of Disappearance,” by Zach Cregger, and “The Bad Guys 2,” by Pierre Perifel and JP Sans, both drawing over 16 thousand viewers between Thursday and Sunday.
“At the heart of the narrative is Vanessa (Sara Matos), a television actress who inherits an old, dilapidated theater in Porto. Against her agent’s advice to sell the place, Vanessa decides to fight for the theater’s restoration, gathering friends to stage a performance capable of restoring its former glory. But she quickly finds herself in conflict with a rival owner who will do anything to thwart this dream,” reads the film’s synopsis.
The cast of ‘O Pátio da Saudade’ includes names such as Ana Guiomar, Manuel Marques, José Pedro Vasconcelos, José Raposo, Gilmário Vemba, José Martins, Alexandra Lencastre, José Pedro Gomes, Aldo Lima, and Carlos Cunha.
The most-watched Portuguese film this year so far was “On Falling,” by Laura Carreira, which collected over 13 thousand viewers since its release at the end of March.
The predecessor to Leonel Vieira’s latest film, the 2015 version of “O Pátio das Cantigas,” remains the most-watched Portuguese film since ICA began keeping records in 2004.
The film amassed 608 thousand viewers and generated 3.1 million euros in revenue across nearly 15 thousand sessions.
