In a statement, the Local Health Unit Almada-Seixal (ULSAS), which oversees the Garcia de Orta Hospital (HGO), reported that only July 2005 saw more admissions in a single month (1,980 admissions).
Data indicates that October also recorded 278 births, the highest number since 2018, when 281 births were registered in a single month (August).
Regarding admissions in the gynecology and obstetrics wards of ULSAS, October marked the highest figures in the past 10 years: 762 obstetrics admissions and 144 gynecology admissions were recorded in October 2025.
According to ULS Almada-Seixal, these figures reflect a positive trend in response to pregnant women, improving since September due to the recent addition of five specialists.
Currently, the health unit is considering two more specialists, who are expected to join the team soon.
“We are extremely pleased to witness this recovery in our Obstetrics Service, with the emergency and maternity block increasingly able to meet the needs of our patients, functioning almost fully since September, reversing the trend of previous months,” stated the Chairman of the Board of ULSAS, Pedro Correia Azevedo.
He added, “The increase in response has only been possible thanks to team reinforcement and, largely, due to the commitment of everyone involved and the contributions from the entire service team, for which the Board of Administration is grateful.”
Garcia de Orta Hospital, as explained by ULSAS, “is a specialized perinatal support hospital with an excellent multidisciplinary team, capable of facilitating childbirth at any gestational age, with all the necessary support available.”
This hospital, located in Almada, Setúbal district, began its operations in September 1991, replacing the old Almada Mercy Hospital/District Hospital of Almada, and currently serves an estimated population of around 350,000 people in the municipalities of Almada and Seixal.
