With the “Equality Benches,” the municipality of Oeiras declares in an official post its ambition to take “a significant step in the fight against homophobia” and serve as “a welcoming and inclusive space for everyone”.
The rainbow flag represents LGBTQIA+ individuals, encompassing lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, and other gender identities and sexual orientations not specifically listed (indicated by the + sign).
The benches have been installed across the five parishes of the municipality – Barcarena; Porto Salvo; Algés, Linda-a-Velha, and Cruz Quebrada-Dafundo; Carnaxide and Queijas; Oeiras, Paço de Arcos, and Caxias – with precise locations available on the municipality’s website.
“These benches are not just a place to rest; they are a symbol of inclusion, diversity, and love in all its forms,” emphasizes the municipality, affirming “Oeiras’ commitment to a society where all people, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, origin, or belief, are valued and welcomed”.
Oeiras addresses residents, reminding them that “by sitting on these benches, they occupy a space of freedom, empathy, and equality,” and extends an invitation: “Sit down. Respect. Celebrate.”
The municipality stresses that “everyone deserves a place where they can simply be who they are”.
