“The valorization of olive cake as a byproduct, moving away from being considered waste and being utilized as a resource, is of utmost importance for the sector, notably because olive growers can now economically benefit from what was previously deemed waste,” stated CAP in a communiqué.
This measure was announced by the Minister of Environment and Energy, Maria da Graça Carvalho, in Lisbon, at the congress marking the confederation’s 50th anniversary.
Farmers emphasized that this decision still requires regulation and expressed hope that it will occur shortly.
CAP also highlighted that this measure has economic and social impacts, as it allows for the creation of more business and employment opportunities, as well as fostering innovation. Environmentally, it facilitates the reuse of this byproduct.
