A statement of mourning was published on the website of the municipality of Oleiros in the district of Castelo Branco, where the president, Miguel Marques, and the executive express their heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of André Jorge Gonçalves Marques, who was one of the fatalities of the accident.
The note, which marks today’s national day of mourning for Wednesday’s tragic accident on the Glória elevator, mentions that André Jorge Gonçalves Marques was originally from the parish of Sarnadas de São Simão.
Today, Carris, the transportation company operating the Glória elevator, announced on their official Facebook page that the brakeman, André Marques, is one of the fatalities of the derailment.
Brakeman of the Santo Amaro Station, André Marques was serving on the Glória elevator at the time of the accident.
In their post, Carris highlights the loyalty and dedication, as well as the value and professionalism of André Marques, who served the company for 15 years.
“He performed his duties with excellence, being an exemplary representative of Carris in the city’s history, contributing significantly to the quality of service we provide daily to our customers and to Lisbon,” the company stated.
Regretting the brakeman’s “tragic end,” Carris remembers him as a “dedicated, amiable, smiling professional, always willing to contribute to a greater good,” expressing condolences to his family and friends.
The accident resulted in 16 deaths.
The derailment also caused injuries to two dozen people, including Portuguese and foreigners of various nationalities.
The Government declared a national day of mourning today.
The Glória elevator connects the Restauradores to the São Pedro de Alcântara Garden in the Bairro Alto over a distance of approximately 265 meters and is a popular attraction for tourists.
