
With olive oil being a notable factor in the recent price hikes, the basket of 63 essential goods witnessed an increase in the week from October 15 to October 22. As reported by DECO PROTeste, the cost of the basket rose by 48 cents (an increase of 0.20%), now totaling 242.24 euros.
“At the beginning of this year, it cost 6.07 euros less (a decrease of 2.57%). Nearly four years ago, on January 5, 2022, these same products could be purchased for 54.54 euros less (a reduction of 29.06 percent),” experts detailed in the analysis published on the website.
The association for consumer protection has also highlighted the products that have become more expensive in the last seven days, with olive oil, in particular, returning to this list after being priced under 7 euros for three consecutive weeks.
“On October 22, a 75-centiliter bottle of olive oil cost 7.17 euros, which is 52 cents more (an increase of 8%) than the previous week. This marks the first time in 12 consecutive weeks that the price of extra virgin olive oil has exceeded 7 euros. In the first week of this year, it cost 9.52 euros, but since April, it has mostly been below 7 euros,” experts detailed.
Beyond olive oil, other foods have also seen price increases. The analysis noted that whole grain cereals became the most expensive product, increasing by 15%. This was followed by sliced Flemish cheese with a 13% increase and mackerel with a 9% rise.
There are also notable changes in products that have become more expensive since the beginning of the year. According to the analysis, broccoli saw the largest increase at 34% since January 1.
Next were eggs, which increased by 32%, followed by oranges with a rise of 24%.
