Due to the nominations, “On Falling” is up for the “Discovery Prize,” an accolade awarded by that academy together with the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI).
“On Falling” marks the first fiction feature film by Laura Carreira and has garnered several awards since its debut at the Toronto Film Festival, Canada, in 2024.
The feature film, co-produced by the Portuguese-British BRO Cinema and Sixteen Films, delves into issues of job insecurity and loneliness, centered on the story of Aurora, a young Portuguese expatriate in Scotland.
Laura Carreira, who has been living and working in the United Kingdom for over a decade and is the mind behind the short films “Red Hill” (2018) and “The Shift” (2020), was honored twice last weekend at the Scottish BAFTA awards — for Screenplay and Fiction Film — with “On Falling.”
In 2024, she won a directing award at the San Sebastián festival (Spain) and the film was recognized at the London Film Festival with the First Feature Award. Actress Joana Santos, the film’s lead, was honored at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival in Greece.
Among the nominees announced today by the European Film Academy, “Afternoons of Solitude,” by Spanish director Albert Serra, co-produced by Portuguese Rosa Filmes, stands out as it is nominated for “European Film” and “European Documentary.”
The nominees for “European Director” include Greek Yorgos Lanthimos, Spaniard Oliver Laxe, German Mascha Schilinski, Norwegian Joachim Trier, and Iranian Jafar Panahi.
Films like “Sirat” by Oliver Laxe and “Sentimental Value” by Joachim Trier are among the most nominated, competing in five categories.
The nominees announced today during the Seville Film Festival in Spain will be supplemented with candidates from other categories later.
The ceremony for the 38th European Film Awards is scheduled for January 17 in Berlin.
