
One person died and another sustained minor injuries on Tuesday afternoon following a collision between two passenger vehicles on the A2 highway near the Castro Verde junction.
The Baixo Alentejo Sub-regional Emergency and Civil Protection Command confirmed the incident to Notícias ao Minuto, stating that the alert was raised at 4:40 PM.
The highway was temporarily closed in both directions to allow for the landing of a helicopter from the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM), according to a Civil Protection source.
A source from the Beja Territorial Command of the GNR indicated that the victim was an 84-year-old woman, but details of the other injured person are unknown.
BCR – Brisa Concessão Rodoviária reported that the accident occurred at “kilometer 185, in the Castro Verde area,” causing the closure “in both directions” on the A2.
The site was attended by 27 personnel from the Ourique firefighters, INEM, and the GNR, supported by seven vehicles and a helicopter. An Immediate Life Support ambulance from Castro Verde was also mobilized.
At 6:21 PM, BCR-Brisa Concessão Rodoviária communicated that “traffic was reopened in both directions on the A2.”
