“The online purchases of goods and services in the Iberian Peninsula are expected to exceed 125 billion euros by 2025, a 13.7% increase from the previous year,” stated a communication.
Post offices reported that fashion and electronics will be the most purchased categories.
In Portugal, almost all categories saw an increase in online purchases last year, with household items rising by 5.8 percentage points compared to 2023.
In Spain, the category that grew the most was food products from supermarket stores/sites, which increased by 6.1 percentage points.
The report concluded that consumers continue to favor online shopping for its convenience and autonomy.
In Portugal, the number of people who purchased goods online last year rose by 2.1% to 5.27 million, while in Spain, there was a 6% increase in online shoppers to 27.8 million.
The CTT report indicated that out-of-home deliveries will gain more relevance, but home delivery will remain the preferred option (68.4%) for consumers.
“In Portugal, there is a growing expectation for faster and more flexible delivery solutions, especially among younger people: 10.5% of Generation Z [people born between 1997 and 2012] prefer same-day deliveries, and 13.6% value deliveries in just two hours,” it added.
This report is based on the results of a study conducted by CTT in Portugal and Spain, between May and June.
The study involved 500 telephone surveys of online buyers in Portugal and 1,000 in Spain, as well as 70 surveys of online retailers in Portugal and 150 in Spain, and included 12 face-to-face interviews with e-sellers in Portugal and eight in Spain.
The document also includes data from CTT’s quarterly e-commerce barometer survey of around 50 specialists in this area in Portugal.
