“Only time we are satisfied to see Marcelo leave the city”

The Mayor of Porto, Pedro Duarte, was among those who visited President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who was hospitalized at São João Hospital following an emergency surgery for an incarcerated hernia on Monday.

The mayor described his visit as a “courtesy visit.”

“I come, on behalf of the city, to express our appreciation and satisfaction because everything went very well,” the mayor stated, emphasizing that this also demonstrates “the city of Porto welcomes everyone, particularly the President of the Republic.”

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is expected to be discharged today. Pedro Duarte explained his visit today was due to the President still “recovering.”

“It’s the only time we’re pleased to see him leave the city. Otherwise, we enjoy having him here,” joked the mayor, noting it as a “happy farewell.”

He further mentioned that, “despite being a scare,” this moment will bring “good memories” as everything went well and Marcelo was well-treated in the city’s hospital.

Marcelo is expected to be discharged within hours, stated the president of São João Hospital, in Porto, today.

The President was admitted on Monday night at São João Hospital in Porto after feeling unwell, according to the Presidency of the Republic.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa underwent surgery for an incarcerated hernia and has been recovering well. Yesterday, he received visits from the Prime Minister and the President of the Assembly of the Republic, José Aguiar-Branco.

Upon arrival, Luís Montenegro told journalists he brought “a hug from the Portuguese people” to Marcelo. “An opportunity to convey that the country is naturally with him and wishes him a speedy recovery,” he emphasized.

Aguiar-Branco assured that Marcelo “will work until the end of his term.”

“He was in good spirits, optimistic, the President we all know, with the drive for the upcoming work in the next weeks. Well-treated. Looking good. We can be satisfied because we will certainly have the President working until the end of his term,” he assured, adding that Marcelo “fortunately still has much work to do until the next presidential elections.”

On Wednesday, José Luís Carneiro, leader of the Socialist Party (PS), and the Mayor of Porto met with the President of the Republic.

Carneiro brought a book about the city of Porto, where the socialist “lives” and maintains his “personal and family life.”

“I came to offer my support to the President of the Republic for whatever may be useful,” he began, adding that he decided to bring him a book because he knows Marcelo “likes to read and is a man of culture.”
