Opens in 2026: Mercadona is already recruiting for a new supermarket

The year has not concluded yet, but Mercadona is already setting sights on 2026. The Spanish group announced last week that recruitment has begun for a new supermarket opening in Beja.

“Mercadona, a supermarket company with more than 65 stores in Portugal, will open a new supermarket in Beja next year, located in the new Retail Park, and recruitment is underway for this new location,” reads a statement released by the group.

According to the Spanish brand, the open positions at the mentioned supermarket are for store operator.

“All job offers include a training period with a permanent contract and are paid from the first day. Furthermore, during this period, all expenses – food, transportation, accommodation, and also trips home twice a month for all employees – are covered by the company,” the statement disclosed.

In the same statement, Mercadona notes that “the company operates in 12 districts in Portugal and has 7,000 employees, with 1,700 joining the company in 2024.”

“To respond to the expansion plan, the company is recruiting for various roles, reinforcing its commitment within the national territory and creating stable and quality employment,” the statement explains.

It reveals that “at the beginning of the year, the company announced an 8.5% increase for all employees, effective from January 2025, setting the entry-level salary at €14,963.90 gross annually, with salary progression up to €20,465.10 achieved within a maximum of four years.”

“Added to these amounts are the daily meal allowance and allowances for Sundays, holidays, and night work hours. With the fulfillment of individual and company objectives, the Annual Bonus is also added, equivalent to an extra salary from the first full calendar year, and equivalent to two extra salaries after four years of service,” the statement reads.

The “new salary table thus offers an entry salary 23% above the national minimum wage (NMW). Employees with more than four years of service currently earn a salary 68% above the NMW.”
