The renovation included ten buildings at the University Hospitals of Coimbra (in Celas), the General Hospital (Covões), and the Sobral Cid Hospital, taking place between December 2024 and April 2025, according to a statement from ULS released today.
“With a total investment exceeding 700,000 euros, this operation was 70% co-financed by the Heritage Rehabilitation and Conservation Fund, demonstrating the joint commitment to promoting safer, healthier, and more sustainable environments in the public sector,” it emphasized.
The ULS of Coimbra highlighted that exposure to asbestos, especially when materials containing it deteriorate, poses a serious risk to respiratory health.
“Its removal is therefore an imperative of institutional responsibility and an essential preventive measure,” the entity noted.
The operation was conducted “with the utmost technical rigor and in accordance with all legal and environmental standards,” enhancing the sanitary conditions of the intervened spaces.
The initiative “is part of the plan to modernize and upgrade the ULS of Coimbra’s infrastructure, prioritizing the creation of safer and more suitable environments for delivering excellence in healthcare,” it added.
