Operation Portugal Always Safe detains 46 people in 10 days

The operation, coordinated by the Internal Security System (SSI), mirrors the initiative conducted last year, running from November 5 to mid-December 2024, and similarly aimed to enhance citizen security through various supervision and crime prevention actions across multiple locations in the country, according to a police source.

In a statement, the SSI announced that, as part of the Portugal Sempre Seguro operation, coordinated actions were carried out between October 31 and November 9 involving different entities. The objective was “to strengthen public security, prevent illegal acts, and deter risky behavior, particularly in the areas of road safety checks and the inspection of establishments, including nightlife and dining venues.”

The SSI noted that these operations involved the participation of law enforcement and regulatory bodies including the GNR, PSP, Polícia Judiciária, Food and Economic Security Authority (ASAE), Tax and Customs Authority (AT), and the Authority for Working Conditions (ACT), taking place in locations such as Azores, Aveiro, Bragança, Évora, Faro, Guarda, Leiria, Lisbon, Porto, Santarém, Viana do Castelo, Vila Real, and Viseu.

Over 600 personnel were involved in the operation, supported by more than 180 vehicles.

The SSI reports that, over ten days, authorities inspected 870 individuals, 993 vehicles, and more than 100 establishments, including 50 nightlife venues and over 40 dining establishments.

Preliminary results indicate 46 arrests, primarily for road-related offenses, 49 registered crimes, mostly of a road nature, and 408 fines, including over 300 traffic violations, notably for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Regarding the control of foreigners within national territory, the SSI notes that approximately 20 individuals were found in irregular situations.

A police source stated that the immigrants in irregular situations received notifications to leave the country.

Last year, the Portugal Sempre Seguro operation, whose final results were not disclosed, faced criticism, particularly from left-wing parties, for its targeted approach in detecting immigrants in irregular situations.
