Operation Portugal Always Secure results in 60 detained in the last week

The operation “Portugal Sempre Seguro,” which brought together various police forces and state entities, resulted in 60 arrests over the past six days, 32 of which were related to road crimes, according to provisional results released today.

In a statement, the Internal Security System (SSI) explained that between November 18 and 23, more than 2,724 people, over 2,000 vehicles, five vessels, and 205 establishments were inspected, including 139 night entertainment venues and 60 restaurants.

In addition to the 60 people arrested, mostly for road crimes, authorities recorded 49 crimes, mostly road-related (29), as well as 479 administrative offenses—60% of which were road-related, notably for speeding.

During the same period, three knives and seven vehicles were seized.

According to the data, of the total number of foreigners checked in the operations, 4% were in an illegal situation in Portuguese territory.

This was another phase of the operation “Portugal Sempre Seguro,” which gathered several entities, stated the SSI, adding that the initiatives “focused on the prevention and deterrence of illicit practices, with a particular focus on the inspection of establishments—especially night entertainment venues—and increased road control operations.”

A total of 50 operations were carried out on the mainland and autonomous regions, with the participation of the GNR, PSP, Judiciary Police, Food and Economic Safety Authority (ASAE), Tax and Customs Authority (AT), and the Working Conditions Authority (ACT), involving 1,137 personnel, supported by 353 vehicles and 20 canine teams (teams composed of a police officer and a dog).

The operation “Portugal Sempre Seguro,” conducted for the second time this year, began at the end of October with the aim of reinforcing public safety, preventing illicit activities, and deterring risky behaviors, with special attention to road inspections and establishments, namely night entertainment and restaurants.

Last year, the operation “Portugal Sempre Seguro,” whose final results were not disclosed, faced criticism from left-wing parties for its approach aimed at detecting immigrants in an irregular situation.
