Orchestras of the North, Beiras, and Algarve with annual support of 810 thousand euros

The support is granted through a limited competition, with a total allocation of 9.72 million euros, aimed at supporting orchestras with the status of Regional Orchestra, which was launched in March.

According to DGArtes, each orchestra will receive an annual support of 810,000 euros, amounting to 3.24 million euros per orchestra over four years (2025-2028).

At the announcement of the competition’s opening, DGArtes noted that the 9.72 million euros would be spread over five years: 1.935 million in 2025, 2.43 million in 2026, 2.43 million in 2027, 2.43 million in 2028, and 495,000 euros in 2029.

The Government approved, in November 2023, alterations to the status of regional orchestras and the definition of conditions for granting state incentives, through DGArtes. The document was subsequently enacted by the President of the Republic at the end of December.

Consequently, the status of regional orchestra can now only be granted through competition or limited competition, to make obtaining the status of regional orchestra more demanding.

DGArtes recalls that this new support regime aims to ensure financial stability and the sustained development of regional orchestras, recognizing their structuring role in promoting cultural access, valuing musical heritage, and decentralizing artistic offerings.

The proximity to communities and the cultural public service are central dimensions of this mission, reads the statement released today.

With this support, the orchestras should ensure a regular and diverse program, highlighting classical music, national and contemporary creation, educational projects, social inclusion, and other initiatives with cultural impact in the respective regions: North, Center, and Algarve.

The Orquestra do Norte, based in Amarante, was created in 1992 by the Associação Norte Cultural, after it won the first competition for the creation of regional orchestras.

The founding members of Associação Norte Cultural include the municipalities of Alijó, Bragança, Vila Real, Guimarães, Vieira do Minho, Póvoa de Lanhoso, Montalegre, Terras de Bouro, Torre de Moncorvo, Caminha, Chaves, and Fafe.

The Fundação Casa de Mateus, Fundação Cupertino de Miranda, and some individuals also became founding members of the association.

The orchestra performs regular seasons, with performances in Portugal and abroad.

In February, the Workers’ Committee (CT) of Associação Norte Cultural reported delayed salaries, as well as holiday and Christmas subsidies.

In the complaint on February 3, the CT noted that this is a recurring situation in the last 2/3 years, receiving only eight times in 2024 in cycles of 2/3 months.

The Orquestra Filarmonia das Beiras, based in Aveiro, began its activity in 1997 and has participated in music festivals in Portugal and abroad, collaborating with music schools and young musicians, organizing annual orchestral conducting and vocal music competitions, international symphonic orchestra internships, and the ‘Music in School’ project, involving primary school children.

Since its inception, the orchestra has worked with various musicians, including tenor José Carreras, pianists Mário Laginha and Bernardo Sassetti, and singers Maria João, Mariza, Gilberto Gil, Carlos do Carmo, Carminho, Camané, Paulo de Carvalho, and Rui Veloso.

The Orquestra do Algarve, based in Faro, was founded in 2002, with founders including Turismo do Algarve and the University of Algarve, as well as the municipalities of Albufeira, Faro, Lagos, Loulé, Portimão, and Tavira.

Additionally, the orchestra is associated with the municipalities of Castro Marim, Lagoa, São Brás de Alportel, Silves, and Olhão, along with other institutional partners.

In 2019, the Orquestra do Algarve initiated the Community Choir.
