A delegation from the Ordem dos Médicos (OM) visited the gynecology and obstetrics service at Aveiro Hospital today and identified concerning weaknesses in women’s healthcare services. The situation demands immediate and effective intervention, according to the organization’s statement.
Following direct contact with hospital doctors and the management board, the Ordem dos Médicos expressed the urgent need to reinforce medical teams.
“To achieve this, it is necessary to launch recruitment processes for available positions, create attractive conditions for doctors, and ensure adequate and safe working environments,” the statement emphasized.
The Ordem dos Médicos anticipates that in July and August, several days will see the gynecology and obstetrics emergency services closed due to a lack of doctors.
“This situation severely compromises the ability to meet the needs of pregnant women and women in the region,” it warned.
Among the main issues identified during the visit were the critical shortage of specialist doctors, the significant exhaustion of existing teams, and the imminent risk of frequent service interruptions.
The Ordem dos Médicos concluded the statement by calling for a concrete and urgent intervention by all competent entities, particularly the executive board of the National Health Service, which is responsible for ensuring response at both national and local levels.
