In a joint statement, the professional orders of Biologists, Nurses, Pharmacists, Physiotherapists, Doctors, Dentists, Nutritionists, and Psychologists emphasized that healthy aging has been “identified as a priority and essential area of intervention.”
The organizations propose the creation of multidisciplinary teams dedicated to aging, nationwide coverage of screenings, and the development of empowerment and awareness programs along with regular consultations across various forums.
“Public policies for healthy aging should aim at actions, services, and structures that optimize opportunities for equitable access to health interventions, recognizing the abilities and resources of older people, while respecting their needs and decisions,” the joint stance reads.
According to the orders, healthy aging “requires greater collaboration among health professionals to promote preventive health strategies, ensuring not merely more years of life but years lived with vitality, autonomy, purpose, and quality.”
Citing data from the National Statistics Institute which reports that there are 188 people over the age of 65 for every 100 young people, the entities highlight the urgency of intervention in primary health care, in a social context, and at the educational level.
“The orders also commit to cooperation in an integrated approach that combines science, technology, and humanization to promote healthy aging in its various dimensions,” they stress in the statement.
The health professionals’ representatives added that they “have been holding regular meetings” to discuss various topics, including the quality of care provided to the population.
